Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 56 on May 7, designating a portion of State Route 421 in Medina County as the Corporal David James Amheiser Memorial Highway. The newly named stretch will run adjacent to the Amheiser family farm.
The designation honors Corporal David James Amheiser, who died at age 19 on August 29, 1970, while serving in Vietnam. He was recognized with several military awards including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Valor.
State Representative Sharon Ray said, “I’m proud to see this bill officially cross the finish line and be signed into Ohio law. This is a meaningful way to honor a great local hero. I hope this memorial highway keeps Corporal Amheiser’s legacy alive in our community, brings comfort to his family, and honors the sacrifice he made.”
Ray has been involved extensively in Medina County through community service and has served as state representative for Ohio’s 66th House District. She leads the General Government Committee and participates in Finance, Energy and Children and Human Services groups. Ray has also received awards from the Greater Akron Chamber and YMCA, according to the official website.
The memorial highway aims to provide lasting recognition of Corporal Amheiser’s service while offering comfort to his family and reminding residents of his sacrifice.
