The Ohio Investigative Unit is reminding parents and students of Ohio's Alcohol Laws ahead of Graduation Ceremonies.
1. It is illegal to provide places for your children and/or their friends to drink in a 'safe' environment. Parents cannot give alcohol to children who are under 21, who are not their own, even in their own home, with the other parents' permission. If you are convicted of providing alcohol to a person under 21 years of age, you can face a maximum sentence of six months in jail and/or a fine of $1,000.
2. It is illegal to purchase alcohol for anyone under 21. If you purchase, sell, or give alcohol to anyone underage, you may face a $1,000 fine and/or up to six months in jail.
3. If you are under 21 and caught driving with a BAC of .02 percent or higher, a level that can be reached after just one or two drinks, police can arrest you. You will receive a suspension of your driver's license for at least 90 days, up to a maximum of two years, plus four points on your driving record. Having open alcoholic containers in your vehicle is also illegal.
Carry outs and drive through establishments will be on high alert for underage individuals who are attempting to purchase alcohol. It is the stores' responsibility to make sure they are not selling or serving to individuals under the age of 21.
These Graduation Celebrations can turn into tragedies when combined with underage drinking, and can result in devastating, lifelong effects to teens, their families, and their communities.
Together, we can commit to making Ohio safer, and prevent senseless tragedies that are associated with illegal and irresponsible underage alcohol consumption.
If you have information about a bar, store or carryout selling beer and/or liquor to persons under the age of 21, or you have information of an underage house party, please notify the Ohio Investigative Unit by calling the #677 on your cell phone and your complaint will be investigated.
