A senior Information Systems Management major at Shawnee State University, Jerrica Whitaker (Hometown: Columbus, Ohio) is in the process of completing an on-campus internship as the Network Lab Manager for the Advanced Technology Center. In her role, she feels she has been prepared for her future career.
“It’s given me real-world, hands-on experience that I couldn’t have received in the classroom alone,” she said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work on several projects which I can place on my resume that have the potential to set me apart from other job candidates.”
When Whitaker first heard of the opportunity to become a Network Lab Manager on campus, she knew it would be a great opportunity to gain more experience in a field that aligns with her career goals and interests. In her position, she is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization in the lab, preparing the lab for daily operation, installing and repairing hardware, software, and operating systems, and maintaining the lab’s local network which is built entirely by the students. Whitaker also assists students in completing assignments during open lab hours and tutoring those who are seeking extra help.
“I’ve also had the opportunity to attend several security-related events that gave me the chance to network with professionals in my field that I wouldn’t have been able to meet otherwise,” she said.
Looking toward her future career, Whitaker is thankful for the opportunities she’s had to make professional connections and network with others she might not have met otherwise.
“By connecting with industry leaders and sharing my research I was able to obtain several job interviews which could potentially lead to employment post-graduation,” she said. “I’m confident that my future in Information Security is bright and I have my current job in the Network Lab to thank in part for that.”
