The Ohio House of Representatives has passed Substitute House Bill 2, approving the allocation of $350 million from the Strategic Community Investment Fund for various projects across the state. State Rep. Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) announced the news, expressing confidence that these projects will strengthen not only Medina County but also the northeast Ohio region and the state as a whole.
Ray highlighted several local provisions that will have a positive impact on Medina County. This includes $2 million to repurpose a former industrial site in Wadsworth into a state-of-the-art athletic complex and outdoor recreation area, creating a regional tourist destination. Additionally, $1.5 million will be used to construct community spaces on Lake Medina, enhancing fishing, paddle-craft, and recreational amenities. Another significant allocation of $1 million will go towards building a modular fire training tower to equip first responders in better serving their communities.
Furthermore, $396,000 will be used to connect pathways in the Medina County Park District, increasing accessibility to local parks and wildlife programs. A communication tower will also be added in Seville, with an allocation of $350,000, which will create broader coverage and boost public safety. The Medina County Sheriff's Office Jail will receive $300,000 to provide elevated work platforms in jail pods and the booking station, ensuring the safety of employees. Additionally, $100,000 will be used to renovate the former Medina County Achievement Center bus garage into a vocational training program for individuals with disabilities, providing career opportunities for all Ohioans. Lastly, $65,000 will be allocated to repair the roof and gutter of the Serenite Restaurant and Culinary Institute, preserving a pillar of Medina's Historic District and enabling culinary students to continue advancing their skills.
Apart from these local investments, Substitute House Bill 2 also includes statewide capital investments. This includes $600 million for the School Building Program Assistance Fund, $400 million for the Public Works Commission Local Public Infrastructure and State Capital Improvement Program, $397.6 million for higher education projects across the state, and $250 million for local jail construction in Ohio.
The Strategic Community Investment Fund was established in the state's main operating budget passed last year and utilizes excess funding from the previous fiscal year. Through conservative fiscal stewardship, the Ohio House was able to dedicate this excess funding towards projects that will propel Ohio forward. The approved funding will be incorporated into the greater State Capital Budget bill, which is a two-year construction budget for capital projects.
With the passing of Substitute House Bill 2, Ohio is set to embark on a range of projects that will enhance communities, bolster infrastructure, and provide new opportunities for residents. The funding will play a crucial role in advancing the state's development and ensuring a brighter future for Ohioans.
