State Rep. Sharon Ray | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Sharon Ray, a Republican from Wadsworth, convened a press conference to discuss House Concurrent Resolution 16. The resolution seeks to raise awareness about the significance of perinatal mental health. Joining Ray at the event were State Representative Anita Somani, a Democrat from Dublin, and State Senators Stephanie Kunze, a Republican from Dublin, and Nickie Antonio, a Democrat from Lakewood. Representatives from Mental Health America of Ohio and LifeStance Health were also present.
Research from the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Women’s Mental Health highlights that approximately 85% of mothers experience some form of mood disturbance during the perinatal period. Furthermore, 10-15% develop more severe symptoms. Suicide is noted as a leading cause of maternal mortality, contributing to about 20% of postpartum deaths.
Ray emphasized the personal relevance of this issue by stating: “As a mother and a grandmother, I know firsthand how critical this issue is.” She further elaborated on the importance of maternal mental health by adding: “To give our children the best chance at life and opportunity to live up their full potential we must start with the health of their mother, including their mental health.”
The resolution awaits further consideration with an upcoming vote on the House floor.
