911, where is the location of your emergency?

911

Wadsworth Police Department issued the following announcement on Apr 7.

"911, where is the location of your emergency?"

This is the first thing you will hear when you call 911 and our Wadsworth Dispatchers answer the phone. The dispatchers emphasize the words 'WHERE' and 'LOCATION' - this is the most important information you can provide, so that dispatchers can immediately start sending first responders to your location.

For nearly five decades, 911 has served as a vital link between the public and emergency services. Here are a few things to keep in mind (and share with your kids, friends, and family) when calling 911.

1. Know Your Location

*Be prepared to provide detailed information about WHERE you are. If you're not sure of your exact address, use landmarks to provide as close to a specific location as possible. Do your kids know their house address, to include house numbers and road names?

2. Don't Hang Up!

*Please stay on the line until the dispatchers tell you it's okay to hang up. Even if you accidentally call 911, don't hang up! Please stay on the line to speak with a dispatcher and let them know emergency services will not be needed and that the call was an accident. If we receive 911 hang-up calls and can't get a hold of the caller, our dispatch center will send out first responders to the location so that we can confirm an emergency is not occurring.

3. Stay Calm

*Do your best to speak clearly. Be aware of any background noise that may interfere, and if possible, move to a more quiet location. Try to be as specific as possible about what's happening. Do you need Police, Fire, or EMS?
