The House Behavioral Health Committee has initiated hearings on House Concurrent Resolution 16, a move that aims to acknowledge the significance of perinatal mental health. This was announced by the resolution's sponsor, State Rep. Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth).
According to data from the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Women’s Mental Health, approximately 85% of mothers experience some form of mood disturbance during the perinatal period. Moreover, between 10-15% develop more severe symptoms.
State Rep. Sharon Ray emphasized the importance of recognizing signs and symptoms of perinatal depression and other mental health conditions during her sponsor testimony. She stated, “Recognizing the signs and symptoms of perinatal depression and other mental health conditions is essential for timely intervention and support.” She further stressed the need to foster open dialogue about mental health and enhance access to mental health services during pregnancy and post-childbirth.
House Concurrent Resolution 16 is currently awaiting further consideration by the House Behavioral Health Committee.
