Now, one fan’s bad rule is another fan’s Golden Rule, so this is purely my opinion and my take on rules that I find cheapen a sport or take away from a sport’s otherwise brilliance.
Let’s talk Christmas sports toys. Christmas morning … the opening of the toys. Is that the best feeling a kid can have? OK, some adults, too. But a kid, knowing this package has socks, that one a shirt, and oh, no … pajamas. OK, a book, maybe a poster … wait a minute, this one could be a toy. Rip the paper and the kid’s eyes light up as he sees it … a toy. A sports toy.
Let’s talk Bowl games. The college football bowl season is upon us. This year there will be 43 different college bowl games running from Dec. 17 through Jan. 10, 2022, concluding with the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship.
Let’s Talk Sportsmanship and respect. Sports is about competition and doing your best on the field or in the arena and not getting off the gas until victory is assured. There is no “participation trophy” in true traditional organized amateur or professional sports. Play hard or don’t play. Win or go home.
Let’s talk about the World Series. The World Series ended last week. Is it just me, or was the entire spectacle of this year’s World Series simply not as exciting as it was back in the day?
Let’s talk sports nicknames. To add color and electricity to the game, whether it is baseball, basketball, football or hockey … an athlete often is attached to a nickname that seems to transcend the sport and the athletes themselves.
In the first-ever Great Lakes Conference championship game, East Division champion Buckeye (7-3, 4-1 GLC) faced off against West division champion Rocky River (7-3, 5-0 GLC). The Pirates took the lead in the second quarter and held off the Bucks for a 23-12 victory.
